The Little Written Art project
was created to give voice to the incredible talent, important insights, and powerful ideas of writers from around the world. We’re on a mission to lift writers up, build connections, and increase access to written art – one little piece of writing at a time.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The idea for the Little Written Art project originated in 2023 when writing teacher and guide Melanie Steele was hosting her popular Retreat for the Writer’s Soul. Working with writers from around the world, she was blown away by the quality of work that was coming out of writers – some of whom had never been published or even shared a piece of writing before. She realized the potential for supporting writers through bite-sized pieces of writing that are manageable for writers and easily accessible to readers.
Throughout 2024, Melanie worked closely with a core group in her writing community to develop strategies for creating little pieces of written art in ways that are beneficial, powerful, and enjoyable to writers. When she brought the idea of distributing the writing through Little Free Libraries, the response from library owners was enthusiastic and positive… and Little Written Art was born!
Now, our thriving group of writers from around the country (and the world!) are creating unique pieces of writing to share in Little Free Libraries across the country. Their insights are valued, and their written art is unique, authentic, and important. It's an honor to help cultivate and share their writing.
A growing network of library owners are signing up to help distribute Little Written Art in their communities – providing access and increasing connection to readers. Together we're providing a beautiful and important service.
Our goal is to distribute 2,500 cards in 2025. This number is based on what we believe is possible while allowing room to dream. Together, we can give voice to more writers, share written art across the country, and expand accessibility in communities across the United States – and beyond.
We believe that art doesn’t have to be in the form of a book to be accessible or distributed by a major publisher in order to be valuable. Some of the best pieces of art come from the hearts of writers who are empowered to deeply express themselves – and given a pathway to connect with readers.
